Someone pointed me in the direction of this blog post at Tomato Nation t’other day. It’s generally an amusing look at things one ought to keep in mind as one puts the college years behind and moves on into adulthood. Rule 1, “Remember to write thank-you notes,” came to mind that afternoon when I received a handwritten thank-you note from Niall Rudd, appreciating my positive review of his edition of Johnson’s Latin poems.

A pleasant coincidence, but also one with a fitting eighteenth-century moral, to wit: if you want the pleasure of receiving thank-you notes, you have to perpetuate the culture of writing them.
