Very long day of conferencing–it’s 1:15am as I write this, and I’ve got to be at an 8am panel tomorrow for Samuel Johnson nonstop all day before driving home tomorrow afternoon. It’s a good year for Johnson here at ASECS, no doubt due to the tercentenary but I’d like to hope that it signifies a more general increase in interest.

Had dinner here, which was fabulous. Went to several university press receptions this evening. Semi-predictably, the conversation turned to music. In the space of a couple of drinks the conversation turned from Ampeg amplifiers to Hawkwind, the blues, and Huey Lewis and the News, to several of us owning The Six Wives of King Henry VIII on vinyl. The “what was the loudest concert you’ve ever been to?” section was also quite illuminating, though perhaps not in the strictly professional sense that John Richetti’s talk this afternoon was.
